青年約翰-格雷迪-科爾(馬特-達蒙飾)生活在得克薩斯州的一家農場。由于母親賣掉了他所居住的農場，他決定與好友萊西-羅林(亨利-托馬斯飾)去探求一個全新的冒險經歷。他們策馬離開家鄉(xiāng)向西部進發(fā)，一路上他們結識了許多朋友。在墨西哥，他們發(fā)現了一塊非常美麗的土地，同時也體會到了這里的混亂無序，對他們來說眼前的一切既神秘而又殘酷無情，到處都有死亡的威脅。對“牛仔”那自由自在浪漫生活的向往，終于驅使他們來到了美國南部邊界地區(qū)，這時他們遇到了十三歲的布萊文斯(盧卡斯-布萊克飾)，一行三人在一處莊園歇腳，為了生計，受雇為莊園主訓練馬匹。在那兒，約翰-格雷迪與富有的農莊主的美麗女兒阿萊珍德拉(佩尼洛普-克魯茲飾)墜入愛河……

　　本片根據Cormack McCarthy所著的同名暢銷小說改編，由曾獲得奧斯卡獎的演員兼導演比利·鮑勃·湯頓以及同樣曾獲得奧斯卡獎的制片人麥克·尼古拉斯共同完成。
