本片改編自斯科特·菲茨杰拉德的同名小說，故事的主人公是個叫做本杰明·巴頓的怪人。他違反了大自然的規律，竟以老人形象降生人世，之后越活越年輕，倒著成長。1919年本杰明·巴頓（布拉德·皮特飾）降生在巴爾的摩，一出生他就已經是一個70多歲的“老”嬰兒，他的父親胡亂的將他遺棄在街邊。幸運的是，一位好心的黑人婦女收養了他，將她那經由歲月沉淀下來的智慧統統教授于他。1930年，本杰明11歲（他現在看起來有60多歲），他遇到了6歲的黛西（凱特·布蘭切特飾），他們相愛了。
　　后來二戰爆發，本杰明坐船從美國來到英國，途中他遇見了各式各樣的人物，見識到了真正的悲劇，也體驗到人性最偉大的光輝。戰爭結束后，他和黛西重逢在紐約，此時黛西已經是一位成功的舞者了。1950年，他們終于看起來差不多大了，本杰明和黛西一起，度過了他們生命中最美好的時光。然而，當本杰明越來越年輕時，他意識到，他不能再和黛西生活在一起了，黛西需要更正常的人生……
